What
you need to know about getting hired and staying sane!
1)
It’s all about who you know.
Relevant experience is often helpful, but it almost always comes
down to who you know and how you found out about the job you're
applying for (in spite of what potential employers will openly
admit, even though it’s almost always the first thing they
ask). Las Vegas nightlife is very incestuous in that our clubs
typically keep the riff-raff out by only opening their employment
arms to those who have at least taken the time to get to know
a few familiar faces. If you’re looking to break into the
industry, spend some time going to clubs on their local / industry
nights, be personable to everyone you meet, follow-up with all
business cards, and always be respectfully patient even if it
takes a little time.
2)
You have to start somewhere. You might have
your heart set on a cushy hosting job at one of the premier nightclub
venues, but nothing comes without a little paying of the dues.
If you can afford to take a job that might not pay all that much
at first, you can easily get a promotions job at virtually any
of the nightclubs in town. This will put you in the mix of things,
and position you for relatively quick upward movement within the
industry. If this isn’t possible, again, make a point to
be at the clubs as much as possible on industry nights while socializing
and making your face known to the people who could eventually
hire you for the position you ultimately want.
3)
Avoid temptations. One of the biggest tourist
draws of Las Vegas is unabashed acceptance of all things excess,
and with that comes the relative availability of virtually anything
that could destroy someone’s life who didn’t keep
them self firmly in check. You have to have the will power to
avoid the temptation of drugs, the ability to handle the constant
availability of alcohol (at the risk of sounding commercially
cliché, always enjoy it responsibly), the knowledge and
street smarts to protect yourself from the wrong people, and the
inclination to meet and surround yourself with an overall insulation
of like-minded level-headed friends to help keep you on your toes.
If this doesn’t sound realistically possible for you, Las
Vegas nightlife isn’t for you.
4)
Manage your best assets. Las Vegas nightlife
is an industry that caters to people from all walks of life. One
day you might find yourself working with Joe Smith the mid-level
manager of Action Insurance, the next you’re partying till
the wee hours of the morning with Larry Page and Sergey Brin -
the owners of Google! With that in mind, you should always look
your best, be intellectually up-to-date on current events, communicate
clearly and effectively, dress stylishly professional, treat everyone
you meet with total respect, and legitimately enjoy yourself at
all times.
5)
Always…ALWAYS… be promoting your venue.
Someone who has been successful in Las Vegas nightlife for a number
of years should have enough of other people’s business cards
collected to fill a storage unit, and enough telephone numbers
in their PDA to match the number of names in the phonebook of
the average American city. An exaggeration, yes, but the point
is that you should constantly be meeting new people and building
relationships while you are promoting your place of work. It will
dramatically raise your overall value in Las Vegas nightlife,
and can help you do nearly anything you ever want to in life.
If
you ever have any questions about any of the venues reviewed on
JackColton.com, please email
me and let me know. If you have a comment or complaint about any
of the above clubs, please let me know. While it takes a collective
amount of feedback to change any of the reviews - every one helps!
